Grutas de Tolantongo is a beautiful natural wonder located in the state of Hidalgo, Mexico. It is a complex of hot springs, caves, and waterfalls that is perfect for a relaxing getaway. This paradise is just 4 hours north of Mexico City, so if you have an extra travel day, I would highly recommend visiting!

The hot springs are the main attraction at Grutas de Tolantongo. They are fed by natural springs that are heated by the earth's core, volcanic activity is not far away after all. The water is a constant 90 degrees Fahrenheit, making it perfect for soaking away your cares. There are a variety of hot springs to choose from, including some that are open-air and some that are cave-like.
The caves at Grutas de Tolantongo (aka the Grutas for which this park is named after) are another incredibly beautiful and popular attraction. They are formed by the same natural springs that feed the hot springs. The caves are dark and mysterious, and they offer a unique experience. You can explore the caves on your own or take a guided tour.

The waterfalls at Grutas de Tolantongo are the perfect place to cool off after a long day of exploring. There are several waterfalls to choose from, ranging in size from small cascades to large plunge pools. You can swim in the waterfalls or simply admire them from a distance.
In addition to the hot springs, caves, and waterfalls, Grutas de Tolantongo also offers a variety of other activities, such as hiking, camping, and fishing. There are also several restaurants and shops on site, so you can easily spend a few days exploring

all that Grutas de Tolantongo has to offer.
If you're looking for a relaxing and rejuvenating getaway, Grutas de Tolantongo is the perfect place. With its beautiful natural setting and variety of activities, Grutas de Tolantongo is sure to please everyone in your group.
Here are some hot tips for visiting Grutas de Tolantongo:
The best time to visit is during the spring or fall, when the weather is mild.
Bring comfortable shoes, as you will be doing a lot of walking. Also bring watershoes since a lot of the riverbed is fairly rocky!
Don't forget your swimsuit!
Be prepared for crowds, especially on weekends and holidays.
There are no ATMs on site, so bring enough cash to cover your expenses.
There is no cell phone service at Grutas de Tolantongo, so be prepared to disconnect from the world.
How do I get there?
You have a few options for travel. There are several great AirBNB Experiences from Mexico City that do day trips or overnight trips with everything included so that you don't have to do the heavy lifting - here is my favorite I have been on : Exploring the Waters of Tolantongo .
If you want more freedom and build your own travel experience, you can rent a car and get a hotel room or camp along the river! The resort has hundreds of hotel rooms, however, you cannot book in advance, only on site, which may sound risky to some people. You can also rent camping equipment from the resort, if that is more your speed. There are a few small towns a short driving distance away where you can stay as well. Check out other activities to try in Hidalgo in my post here.
Truly one of my favorite trips. Grutas de Tolantongo is a unique and incredible destination. With its beautiful natural setting and variety of activities, Grutas de Tolantongo is a must for your travel bucket list. So what are you waiting for? Start planning your trip today!
